Diabetes and School

Ike is a smart boy but math had always been the subject he struggles with most. In 5th grade, the students have a homeroom but change classes for science and math. Just our luck, math falls at a blood check time. This makes it double hard because Ike is missing the homework correction and review time. The teacher does allow him to come see her during study period so they can review his homework but as a 10 year-old boy that only happens if he remembers! It’s frustrating that diabetes has to butt into each and every area of Ike’s life! Can’t it just keep out of Math?

School!

Tomorrow Ike starts back to school!! This is Ike’s second year of school with diabetes and I was a nervous wreck last year before school as everything was new! I’m nervous this year too – but I think I feel unprepared because we have only been pumping for a couple weeks. Our school nurse is fabulous and I LOVE – LOVE – LOVE her! She has taken excellent care of Ike and assures me they will be fine this year as well. I’m sure we will get things ironed out in the first few weeks but I would feel better if I didn’t have him scheduled to go to the nurses office to test 5 times during the school day! Hopefully we can drop at least one testing time depending on how things go. We met with the nurse earlier in the week to go over the pod instructions and today I dropped off his supplies and snacks! Ready or not … Here we go!
